Working Holiday Program

Since 2013, the Working Holiday Program enables up to 200 young Taiwanese per year to have an extended holiday of one year in Belgium and supplement their funds with short-term employment. 

Purpose and duration of the Working Holiday visa

  • The main purpose of the working holiday visa is “holiday.” However it is possible to take up employment or to study in accessory capacity and for a maximum of 6 months - no work permit is required. 
  • The purpose of the stay cannot be subject to any change during the stay.
  • The Working Holiday visa is valid for a period of 12 months.

What are the eligibility criteria for the Working Holiday applicant?

  • be between the age of 18 and 30 years (inclusive)
  • have not participated in the working holiday program for Belgium before
  • have a sufficient knowledge of one of Belgium’s national languages (French, Dutch, German) or English
  • be domiciled in Taiwan
  • travel without dependents
  • have sufficient financial resources at the time of departure, i.e. a minimum of 2.500 EUR

What to do upon arrival in Belgium?

  • Upon arrival in Belgium, participants must register with the municipal authority (commune/gemeente) where they will take up residence within 8 days of their arrival. The residence permit granted by Belgium will allow the holder, following the completion of registration requirements, to reside in Belgium for a period of 12 months. In case of change of residence participants must inform the municipal authority of departure and arrival.
  • The permit will allow multiple entries into Belgium and the rest of the Schengen Area during its period of validity.

What documents should you submit after applying via Visa On Web?

  • A printed and signed copy of your Visa On Web application form 
  • 1 recent passport size photograph in color
  • Proof of payment of the visa administrative fee (please click here for explanation)
  • A passport that includes a personal identification number and which is valid for at least 15 months on the date the visa is issued
  • A valid round trip ticket or sufficient resources to purchase one
  • Proof that applicants possess the equivalent of 2.500 EUR by submitting a certificate of their bank stating the current balance or by submitting their credit card (valid for the period of the stay), together with the last credit card statement
  • An “all risk” insurance valid for the period of your stay and covering occupational accidents, health care including medical costs, hospitalization and return home coverage (purchased after your visa has been approved)
  • A copy of Taiwanese Health Insurance ID card and English Insurance certification to prove your participation in the National Health Insurance Program of R.O.C (Taiwan)
  • medical certificate issued whether by an accredited hospital of the Belgian Office, Taipei or any other hospital. In the latter case the medical certificate must be duly authenticated
  • A duly authenticated certificate of good conduct
  • The document regarding the “use of languages in administrative procedures” (FrenchDutchGerman to be used for communication regarding visa proceedings (see translation in English and in Chinese)
